Public Relations Tip #52 - Public Relations and Your B2B Technology?
.
Every so often I start to get a new bunch of crappy emails that say some new whizzbang technology is getting ready to "take over the world and change marketing as we know it."
Remember - the simplest definition of public relations is "relating to the public" (AKA relating to the marketplce for us marketers.)
Two recent ones that come to mind are RSS and podcasting.
Well - apparently you aren't getting the whole story from the so-called 'gurus' and others who want to sell you their product that addresses or provides this technology, which is ...
*******************************************
"What if your market doesn't want it?"
*******************************************
RSS is fabulous technology. It really works. But what if people aren't signing up for very many RSS feeds? What if they don't sign up for yours? What if they signed up for too many, and now ignore the technology because it became just like email glut?
Then how valuable is it to you to offer RSS feeds because someone says you need to do it?
Podcasts are another one. Apparently they are popular with the Napster crowd ... but how many people in your target market do you see walking around with an IPOD strapped to their head? Or what if they are listening to Black Sabbath and ignoring you?
Is podcasting embraced and used by YOUR demographic and psychographic audience?
In "Ecommerce News" today (http://www.internetnews.com/ec-news/article.php/3555226) they talk about Yahoo Launching a new Podcast Search.
Here's a quote: "There's a lot of buzz about podcasting, audio content delivered over the Internet as RSS feeds. But nobody much is listening, according to a study released today."
Here's another: "Yahoo Podcast Search comes at a time when the use of RSS is out pacing consumer awareness. "
One last quote: "Oddly, the study found consumers were more aware of podcasting than they were of RSS itself. Compared to the 12 percent who were aware of RSS, 28 percent of survey participants knew about podcasting. But only 2 percent actually listened to them."
Read those quotes again. What good is business technology if the consumer marketplace resists it?
For you - that's the $64,000 question.
Remember - the market makes all the rules because it votes with its dollars. Lots of bright people with great products die broke ... and sometimes "crap sells."
The moral: The market sets both the 'demand' and the 'price' - so it makes 100% of all the rules - whether we as marketers want to admit that or not.
